A message from Nurse Pro:

With warmer weather on its way, Maine’s ticks are coming out to play. May is Lyme Disease Awareness Month and Maine CDC wants to remind everyone to be "Tick Free ME"  Health care providers reported over 2,600 cases of Lyme disease in 2022 (data as of March 7, 2023).

The best way to prevent a tick borne disease is to prevent tick bites in the first place. Deer ticks can be active any time the temperature is above freezing. Make these habits part of your daily routine year-round to stay tick free:

1. Know tick habitat and use caution in areas where ticks may live.

2. Wear light-colored clothing that covers arms and legs.

3. Use an EPA-approved repellent like DEET, picaridin, IR3535, or oil of lemon eucalyptus on skin and permethrin on clothing.

4. Check for ticks daily and after any outdoor activity. Do not forget to check family members and pets too. Take a shower after being out in tick habitat to wash off any crawling ticks that have not attached yet.

5. Remove your clothing when you get home and put it in the dryer before washing. Use high heat for 10-15 minutes to kill any crawling ticks.

When infected deer ticks bite, they can spread the germ that causes Lyme disease. The deer tick has to bite for 24-48 hours to spread the germ to you. Use frequent tick checks to find and remove ticks as early as possible to stop this spread.

Get your KCS Swag… (in case you missed the message earlier this week)

We are opening a short and limited store where you can buy KCS swag for your family! If we have good interest, we can bring the store back next year with more item options.

Our Wellness Team tries to coordinate events and activities throughout the year to support and encourage staff, student, and family wellness. Past events include, a fall Turkey Trot, a winter Sock Hop, our annual Wellness Day, and many other fun and engaging activities throughout the year. While these events do not cost a lot of money to run and we appreciate everything that KCPTA provides our school for funding enriching experiences, we wanted to ensure that we had another option for a funding source for these types of activities. Plus, we thought it would be cool to be able to show our school pride with these clothing items!

Click here to see our KCS swag store. The ordering window closes on Friday, May 19th. You pay online, so the school is not handling any of the actual ordering. Items will be delivered to the school, and we will distribute them to families. More information about distribution will come out later. So, get your KCS swag before the end of the school year!

Info from last week’s Tel-u-Gram…

Join us for a celebration of students' work for KCS Arts Night! May 31, 2023- 5:00-6:30 pm -

This will be an enchanted evening, highlighting K-5 Visual Art, STEM work, Spanish Collaborative Projects, Classroom Literacy and a performance by our 5th grade Band. The event will be a sharing of work created by KCS students this spring, all with a common theme of 'nature'. Also, it will be the formal 'opening' of the KCS Garden, where you can enjoy healthy refreshments and community connections. Hope to see you there!

KCS Moose Courtyard Garden is Springing to life!  We are nearly ready to add plants to our KCS courtyard garden and are looking for donations. Due to space constraints there is a very specific list of plants we have planned to add to our raised beds. If you are interested and able, please consider signing up to purchase and deliver to our Moose Courtyard on May 22. We have a morning delivery window planned from 8:30-10:00 or an afternoon drop off from 2:30-3:30, but please email if another time would be convenient for you.

For those of you who are planners, the school board of directors recently approved the RSU 21 Instructional Calendar for the 2023-24 school year.   Link for Instructional Calendar

Community Resources  In a moment of crisis, you do not have to be alone. Sometimes you need a conversation--not an internet search. Dial 2-1-1 for the Maine Hotline. This service can help with issues like acute crisis, financial assistance, mental health, addiction treatment, health care, or heating and utilities assistance. Additionally, the national Suicide Hotline is 9-8-8.

Here is a list of more resources available to everyone throughout our district and beyond.
